AKA Nanoscape: Blood Stream.
Arthur Olson, The Scripps Research Institute and (art)n Laboratory: Stephan Meyers, Ellen Sandor & Janine Fron

"This piece shows a representation of what is going on in the blood stream. What we are looking at here is a drop of blood of someone who had a polio virus. The large object here is the artist's representation of a viral particle - an invading virus. And these molecules here, that we see attaching to it, those are antibody molecules. That's what you are seeing here in microscopic terms. You're seeing the antibody molecule 'dock' in a lock and key arrangement. There's one binding here and one binding here. It can now be recognized by a large cell, a cell called a phagocyte or a macrophage which is on the scale that this is done is bigger than this room."

See also Nanoscape II: Viral Assembley

This image depicts the process of assembly of a poliovirus capsid. The viral capsid, or outer shell is composed of 60 copies each of four distinct protein subunits, which self-assemble into a spherical particle with the icosahedral symmetry of a soccer ball. The depiction shows the final pentameric sub-assembly (composed of 5 copies each of the 4 chains) docking to the almost complete shell.

Polio Vaccine

IMPORTANT NEWS
CDC National Immunization Program | Informed Parents Against VAPP (IPAV)
Immunization Action Coalition (IAC)
National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP)

IMPORTANT NEWS: The polio vaccine recommendations in the USA have recently altered significantly.

The ACIP recommendations for an all-IPV series went into effect on January 1, 2000. They replace those issued in 1997, which, according to ACIP, were intended to represent a three- to five-year transition policy to an all-IPV schedule. The 1997 recommendations consisted of two doses of IPV at two and four months of age, followed by two doses of oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) at 12 to 18 months of age and at four to six years of age. According to ACIP, an all-IPV schedule is needed to eliminate the risk of vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis while maintaining population immunity.

From The American Family Physician, Practice Guidelines, ACIP Issues Updated Recommendations for Polio Vaccine
http://www.aafp.org/afp/20010115/practice.html

The new recommendations were also reported in Newsbites 21st January 2000, 7th December 1999 and 18th June 1999. OPV (Oral Polio Vaccine) is still the primary polio vaccine in the U.K. However, the desirability of reverting to an all IPV (Inactivated Polio Vaccine) schedule in those regions or countries where the 'wild' polio virus has been eradicated should not be confused with the application of OPV in those countries or regions where polio is still endemic. See Polio Biology VI The Polio War and Vaccine Strategy by Eddie Bollenbach, a Lincolnshire Post-Polio Library Publication.

Of particular interest are their Vaccine Information Statements (VIS), specifically the one on polio, which have recently been translated into many languages by the State of California's Department of Health Services and the Minnesota Department of Health. The Polio VIS is available in the following languages as well as English; Armenian, Cambodian, Chinese, Farsi, Hmong, Japanese, Korean, Laotian, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Samoan, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, and Vietnamese. A Serbo-Croatian Polio VIS will be available soon. All the VIS's are PDF files and have been created using version 3 of Acrobat (see the advice regarding Acobat versions on the VIS download page). The VIS's reflect recommended vaccination schedules in operation in the USA .

Polio Virus Eradication

Why Polio Virus Eradication?

The Polio Eradication Initiative may succeed in eliminating in the wild some strains of the polio virus by 2005 and polio survivors in general would applaud and support the campaign. However, until some resources are channelled towards helping polio survivors deal with the effects of the disease, it is a foregone conclusion that polio will remain a reality for many hundreds of thousands of polio survivors throughout the world for many decades to come. In 2005, unable to obtain the most basic treatment and orthotics, will the young polio survivor in those areas still recording cases of polio, consider 'polio vanquished'? In 2005, unable to obtain the minimal acceptable assessment and treatment for the new late effects symptoms, will the polio survivor of the epidemics of the previous century consider 'polio vanquished'? In the 'war against polio', polio survivors are the forgotten veterans of that war. We will still be fighting polio long after the surveillance teams have been disbanded and the WHO have declared the world 'polio-free'.
