DISCERN
http://www.discern.org.uk/
"The DISCERN website is an experimental site consisting of an online version of the DISCERN instrument and handbook. The handbook is designed to help you understand and use DISCERN effectively. It has been written from the perspective of a health consumer (or patient), but can be used by anyone interested in information about treatment choices. DISCERN was initially developed for use with consumer health information in conventional print media. However, DISCERN may also be a useful tool for assessing a broad range of consumer health information on the internet. We have made minimal changes to the original instrument and handbook for our initial website, as we would like users, providers and producers of online consumer health information to help us develop the site."

Quackwatch
http://www.quackwatch.com/
A difficult site to catagorise and it is included here as a 'compendium of tutorials'. It describes itself as follows:

Quackwatch, Inc., a member of Consumer Federation of America, is a nonprofit corporation whose purpose is to combat health-related frauds, myths, fads, and fallacies.

Our activities include:

All the information on the Quackwatch site should be given serious consideration. The price of of easily accessible quality medical health related information such as found on this, the Lincolnshire Post-Polio Network web site, is that the perpetrators of "fraud, myths, fads, and fallacies" also, not unsurprisingly, make full use of the web. This necessitates all seekers of medical and healthcare information hone their ability to judge the quality and accuracy of such information. Quackwatch provides extremely useful service by highlighting dubious and misleading claims and assertions. The only qualification regarding Quackwatch is that in the opinion of the Lincolnshire Post-Polio Network Web Adminstrator, it sits firmly in mainstream western medicine with the consequence it sometimes equates 'scientifically unproven' with 'fallacy'.

Medical World Search
http://www.mwsearch.com/
"Medical World Search is the first search engine on the World Wide Web especially developed for the medical field. Medical World Search can aid medical practitioners, researchers, or anyone with basic knowledge of medicine, to formulate an optimally precise query to search the World Wide Web and find exactly the information they need. The major goals of Medical World Search are to provide a search engine that operates over a selection of the most high quality medical sites on the Web and to facilitate searching by using a medical thesaurus that understands medical terminology and can thus search for related terms automatically."

"A major advantage of Medical World Search is that it downloads and indexes the full content of the major medical sites on the Web only, excluding many sites that contain information that is of questionable quality."

Hardin MD - Hardin Meta Directory of Internet Health Sources
http://www.lib.uiowa.edu/hardin/md/index.html

"As the name "meta directory" implies, Hardin MD is a "list of lists" - Its purpose is to provide easy access to comprehensive resource lists in health-related subjects. It includes subject listings in large "one-stop-shopping" sites, such as MedWeb and Yahoo, and also independent discipline-specific lists. Hardin MD subject pages indicate the length of lists in each subject, making it easy to see at a glance which lists are most comprehensive - These are often not the lists from the"one-stop-shopping" sites, but those developed by people within the field, which are well-known and frequently cited within the field, but not well-known outside it."

Northern Light Health & Medicine.
! Currently does not offer public search facility !
Northern Light is a relatively new search engine with some unique facilities. Especially useful are the "Custom Search Folders" that are dynamically created for each search result. These folders, which complement the primary result list, group the results in sub categories. For more information on the search facilities use the above link. Alternatively, use one of the two forms below. The first form searches sites that Northern Light has categorised as "Health and Medicine" related. The second form searches all sites in the Northern Light database but we have initialised the search term as "Lincolnshire AND Polio". The search results will include a "www.zynet.co.uk" folder which will contain only hits for this site. You can append further keywords e.g. "Lincolnshire AND Polio AND exercise" to narrow down the search). However, for searching our Lincolnshire Post-Polio Network site we recommend you use our own Search Site facility.
