Robert Lovering "OUT OF THE DARKNESS: Coping with Disability"
http://www.primenet.com/~arcsphx/outline.htm U.S.A.
! Site no longer available. !
The complete text of Robert Lovering's book appears to be no longer available for reading online or downloading. However, new and used copies of several titles by the author are available for purchase via Amazon (US) and Amazon (UK) at the time of writing (September 2007).

"When we say coping, what do we mean? In wood working a common tool is a coping saw. It is so named because it is capable of making intricate curves in fitting pieces of wood together, or one piece coping or fitting with the other. Coping in general means: "Struggling or contending with on fairly even terms or with some degree of success." Synonyms are encounter, struggle, compete, contend, strive, engage, face, confront, hold one's own, manage, hold at bay, combat on equal terms. That is what this book is all about. It is to help you manage or contend with living life as a person with a disability. And I might as well get it off my chest now at the very beginning. I am sick and tired of this so-called political correctness garbage. I am tired of those who wear their feelings on their sleeves hoping someone will make some sort of ethnic, minority group, gender, political, or whatever statement over which they can take righteous offense. If you are one of those people, kindly do me a favor and stop reading, toss this in a waste container, or just pass this book on to someone else who is not wearing his feelings on his sleeve. Do yourself and me a favor by not bothering to write or call me and inform me of my offense."

Robert Lovering, a polio survivor in Phoenix, has spent his entire adult life in a wheelchair and has been a counsellor on disability issues for many years.

Interesting viewpoints and perspectives here. Tom Walter

John holds the Guinness World Record for being completely dependant on a ventilator for over 40 years. John and Maggie's website has several articles including "The first is 40 Years a layabout!", an autobiographical account by John and two that were written by a friend of theirs, "Each Saving Breath" and "43 Years in an Iron Lung", the latter published in SAGA magazine in November last year. "As a polio survivor, I have had to make numerous adjustments to my lifestyle for many years. As an occupational therapist at Kaiser-Permanente in Southern California I had the opportunity to develop and teach educational programs to several hundred polio survivors over a period of several years. Much of the material was gleaned from solutions I applied in my own life, and I also learned a great deal from participants in the classes.
Each Month there will be a new topic relating to conserving your energy, simplifying your work, prtecting your joints, or modifying your surroundings - anything which might help to lessen the symptoms of pain and fatigue."

Grace Young has also written articles for various medical journals. A number of these can be found in our library. See Catalogue entry for Young, Grace R., MA, OTR
