The following is an extract from Florida East Coast Post-Polio Support Group Newsletter May/June 2000 edition.

This will be the second two-day conference to be held in the Central Florida area – the first one having been held in June 1996. It will be a seminar for polio survivors, their families, friends, health professionals, and interested others to learn what is happening to those of us experiencing Post-Polio Syndrome and how to adjust our lifestyles to these new problems.

The Conference will begin Saturday morning, December 9th and continue to Sunday, December 10th, 2000, at the Daytona Beach Hilton Oceanfront Resort, A1A, Daytona Beach Shores, FL; approximately 20 minutes off of I-95. Conference Registration will begin Friday evening from 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM, and again Saturday morning from 8:00 AM – 8:45 AM when our Conference will start. Lunch will be approximately 12:45 PM to 2:30 PM -- with the afternoon session ending at 4:30 PM. Our speakers will continue Sunday morning at 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. We will have several Question and Answer periods for you to ask our speakers your questions. We will have vendor/exhibitors with plenty of time for you to visit with them.

Registration fee will be $50.00 for early registration (to November 15th); $60.00 for those registering after November 15th or at the door. When sending in your check, please make it payable to FLORIDA EAST COAST POST-POLIO SUPPORT GROUP and mail it, along with your Registration Form, to:

Registration includes all seminar materials, continental breakfasts on both Saturday and Sunday, lunch on Saturday and all exhibits. (Conference Registration form(s) is included.)

A block of rooms have been reserved at the Hilton at $75.00 per night. This rate will apply for two days before the conference and two days after. The rate is guaranteed till November 15th. There are eight accessible rooms with roll-in showers. The Hilton does have a grab bar in every single bathtub in every room in the hotel. They also have shower seats and raised commode supplements for those that need them. Please DO NOT reserve an accessible room unless you truly need one. Make sure you request, either on the enclosed hotel registration form or when you call the hotel, that you absolutely need an accessible room.

Be sure you mention that you’ll be attending the Post-Polio Conference in order to get the special rate. If you would like to rent a wheelchair or a scooter, arrangements have been made with ScooterWorld of Daytona Beach – 904 672-1990 and with Active (Amigo) Mobility Center of Casselberry – 407 331-3303 for you to do so at $10.00 per day. Make sure you tell them that it is for the Post-Polio Conference at the Hilton Hotel in Daytona Beach Shores.

If accessible transportation is needed from the airport to the hotel, arrangements have been made with TransMed -- 238-1111 (ask for Jeanie). The charge is $25.00 -- for you and a companion. When calling be specific in letting them know exactly what you need, i.e., ramp for chair or scooter, etc. Also, give them your flight information so they can be waiting at the airport for you. Don’t forget to tell them that you’ll be attending the Posts-Polio Conference at the Daytona Beach Hilton in Daytona Beach Shores. If no special transportation is needed, there are plenty of taxis outside the airport that will bring you to the hotel.

As of now the following speakers have accepted our invitation:- Dr. Mary Ann Keenan, orthopedic surgeon, at the Albert Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia, PA; Dr. Frederick Maynard, physiatrist, co-editor of the Revised Edition - Handbook on The Late Effects of Poliomyelitis, Marquette, MI; Margaret Backman, PhD., clinical psychologist, in New York, NY; Dr. Paul Peach, former director Warm Springs GA Polio Clinic; Dr. Gudni Thorsteinsson; director of Mayo Clinic’s Post-Polio Clinic in Jacksonville, FL; Dr. Carolyn Geis, director of Halifax Medical Center’s Post-Polio Clinic in Daytona Beach, FL; Dr. Thomas Brown, Urologist, Daytona Beach, FL; Michelle Guevin, PT practicing in Bradenton, FL; Joan Headley, Executive Director of GINI and International Polio Network, St. Louis, MO; as well as two representatives from Medicare – one who will give us all the new information on Parts A and B, and another who will tell us about Medicare and Durable Medical. Our speakers are nationally known post-polio experts. Dr. Armand Zilioli -- Winter Park, FL will be our moderator for the Question and Answer sessions.
